Finovate SF 2009 Wrap Up

Finovate 2009 SF

I spent the greater part of the day at the Finovate 2009 Conference in San Francisco and overall it was a well-presented event. The “DEMO-Style” which seems to be en vogue worked well and it’s great when conference organizer have WiFi for everyone to use. While there were not as many financial technology startups working on mobile solutions as I would have liked, it was definitely on the minds of all the people that I spoke to. Here are some of my takeaways from the event:

Been reading the news about this morning’s big announcement that Oracle is buying Sun Microsystems for $7.4B USD. Everyone has been commenting about the enterprise, MySQL, big servers, Solaris, Java and more. Since the big stuff is covered by the media and analysts, I’ll try and focus on the mobile stuff.

Mobile Advertising is Alive and Well in 2009

Dr. KF Lai, CEO, BuzzCityIn a recent interview during CTIA, I was happy to learn about a new Global Mobile Advertising Index that will be published quarterly by BuzzCity. A brief description about BuzzCity: It was established in 1999 in Singapore, BuzzCity today operates the world’s largest wireless community – mygamma.com – for two distinct audiences: the newly connected emerging middle class in developing markets and the blue collar sector in developed regions.

The Index documents the growth of mobile internet advertising and represents inventory sold across the BuzzCity Mobile Advertising Network in more than 200 countries globally.

It indicates growth in the number of users accessing the mobile internet, in spite of declining public confidence in the economy and security in the job market.
