Me and My SmartMeter
The other day I noticed that I had a door tag from my utility provider, PG&E. They were letting me know that I now have a Smart Meter installed.
What Is It?
PG&E’s SmartMeter™ system uses programmable solid-state meter technology that provides two-way communication between the meter at your home or business and the utility using secure wireless network technology.
What New Features?
Remote Meter Reading
Until the meter can be read remotely by the SmartMeter™ system, a PG&E meter reader will continue to read the meter on a monthly basis, just as they do now. The SmartMeter™ system typically reads the meter remotely within 60 days following installation.
Once read remotely, your energy usage data is collected by the SmartMeter™ system and sent via secure wireless network directly to PG&E. Automated daily-gas and hourly-electric reads will be sent from the meter to PG&E on a daily basis and are used to calculate your energy statement.
Remote meter reading means greater convenience for you. We will no longer interrupt your schedule to read the meter, and you no longer need to provide monthly access to our meter readers.
What Do I Think?
Well, it’s great that even my energy meter is getting an upgrade as well as it’s going wireless. If big energy companies are sold on providing more real-time data about energy usage. I also think that it’s a way for them to have better monitoring edge points that have a win-win benefit. We’ll see after the final installation is complete if it can live up to everything that they promised. The pictures included in this post are both from the door tag as well as the website.
