My time presenting at Nuit du Mobile in conjunction with Mobile Monday Mediterranée.
A comments about the night and earlier in the day. First off, it was a great day meeting with developers and mobile companies in Marseilles. There is certainly a lot of activity around, calling itself the Mobile Valley (a take on Silicon Valley). With companies like TI, Gemalto, Mobile Distillery, Orange and the PACA Mobile Center here, they certainly have some anchor tenants to focus the attention around the mobile ecosystem.
Earlier in the day, there was a WIP Jam and some interesting group discussions around the SIM card, App Stores, Monetization, Mobile Platforms and NFC. In particular, highlighting the SIM card discussion, here are some notes:
- The SIM card might be a way to reduce fragmentation and aid distribution of mobile applications and services
- Programming the SIM card works across all (SIM-based) phones, while it’s not sexy (compared to the iPhone), it works well and is simple to use for any device.
- Gemalto pointed to one case study for a French operator, who launched a Phonebook Backup service that was pre-loaded on the SIM card and the application ran from the SIM, there was a 30% uptake from a subscriber base of 10M and charging 0.50€ each — That amounts to 1.500.000 € !!
