Superbowl Ads 2010

Superbowl XLIV

Well, the Superbowl is over, and lots of people will be talking about their favorite, best and worst commercial.

While food, beer, cars and jobs seem to dominate the sponsors with their commercials, what happened to handsets and mobile operators to advertise?

FLO TVI can understand Apple doing their own thing, but perhaps I would have expected RIM, Nokia, Samsung or LG to maybe sponsor something? Instead, Qualcomm pulled out the big stops with three Flo TV ads (click here).

Perhaps, based on the way things are in the calendar, you can get enough hype before at CES (held earlier in the month) or after the Superbowl at Mobile World Congress which is the following week in Barcelona.

Even Apple doesn’t need the Superbowl to make announcements about their latest products, they have their own events in January and February that get enough hype. But in the ever-increasing need to grab consumers attention, using high profile and large audiences can still be a great way to make an impression.

To contrast this, guerrilla, viral and social marketing have been holding their “beachhead” and lots of companies in the mobile space are benefiting from this tactic to stay relevant. It also seems that the flashy Superbowl ad may not accomplish as much as it would like. It seems that over the years, it’s not a mad dash to go online and learn more about a product, but more to entertain you in small snippets. What would have been better, in my opinion, is to incorporate twitter or texting to short codes as a way of getting people to interact with a TV ad. Everyone knows how to do it, shows like American Idol and Deal or No Deal have taught us to participate in reality TV.

Let’s hope that we shift the thinking about TV ads as a way to start the awareness with consumers and mobile helps get people to take action and consume.
